Brief History of Chanel
Chanel founder Gabrielle Chanel nicknamed ‘Coco’ was born in the year 1883 in France.
The Birth of Chanel
The first Chanel store was a hat boutique named ‘Chanel Modes’ started in the year 1910. This store expanded later on to include many buildings in Rue Cambon. Next in line was a Chanel boutique in Deauville in France started in the year 1912. The jersey sportswear sold through this store increased the popularity of the Chanel brand.
The growing years
Chanel transformed couture with the opening of the couture house in Biarritz in France in 1915. Three hundred employees worked here to design Chanel’s initial Haute Couture collection. The year 1918 saw a Chanel Couture House setting in an entire building in 31, Rue Cambon. This building comprised of salons, boutiques, and Chanel workshops.
Chanel closed its Couture House during the Second World War. However, the boutique in 31, rue Cambon remained open. In 1954 the Couture House was reopened. After a century, the building still stands as testimony to Chanel’s popularity.
The year 1921 saw the birth of the Chanel perfume through a partnership between Gabrielle Chanel and perfumer Ernest Beaux. These perfumes were initially a gift to clients of the brand. Later they were launched in the retail market. The year 1922 saw the launch of the perfume Chanel No. 22.
Makeups and Cosmetics
A separate company, “Sociètè des Parfums CHANEL” was formed in 1924 to produce makeups and cosmetics under the Chanel brand. This led to the launch of powders and lipsticks that year. Ernest Beaux became the brand’s in-house perfume designer. Chanel launched 15 skincare products in 1927. The success of Chanel leads to Gabrielle Chanel building her villa La Pausa.
The 50s decade saw Chanel launching items like Chanel 2.55 bag, a men’s fragrance, a trimmed tweed suit, and two-tone pumps. Gabrielle Chanel passed away in 1971. In the 80s, Karl Lagerfeld became the artistic director of Chanel. He created the ready-to-wear collections of the brand. Chanel watches debuted in 1987. The 90s saw the launch of men’s fragrances, the MADEMOISELLE watch and Chanel fine jewellery. Finally, the 2000s saw Chanel debuting in fashion shows and exhibitions.
The foundation Chanel formed in 2011 aims to support projects to help women. In 2013 Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment was designated as a historical monument.
Chanel continues to launch fine jewellery, clothes, watches, and perfumes targeted at people who love the good things in life.
