Brief History of Dolce&Gabbana
The Dolce&Gabbana fashion house is a relatively young label among luxury fashion houses.
The Creation of The Fashion House
This premium Italian house was created in 1985 due to a partnership between Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce. Domenico Dolce was born in 1958 in Sicily. He had the experience of working in his family-owned clothing business since his childhood. Stefano Gabbana was born in 1962 in Milan. He turned to fashion even though he had a formal education in graphics.
The duo met at their workplace while working as assistant designers. Due to their similar interests, they started a partnership and began creating shows.
The first collection of Dolce&Gabbana “Real Women” debuted in 1985 in Milan Fashion Week. The fourth collection inspired by Dolce’s Sicilian heritage created ripples in the Italian fashion world. Their knitwear line was presented in 1987. The year 1989 saw the launch of their beachwear and lingerie lines. Their leotard line made an appearance after a couple of years. Dolce&Gabbana launched a bridal collection in the year 1992 to 1998. The year 2001 saw the launch of the D&G junior line aimed at children.
The first store
The Dolce&Gabbana label opened its first store in 1989 in Japan. After that, they began exporting their clothes to the United States. They set up a showroom in the United States in 1990.
The Growth Phases
In 1990 Dolce&Gabbana premiered their men’s collection. This year also saw the first perfume launch from Dolce & Gabbana. The brand also set up new offices and showrooms. In addition, Dolce&Gabbana started producing gowns and high-end products along with their regular products. Finally, 1994 saw the launch of the brand D&G which was targeted at the youth. This brand was later merged with the parent brand in 2012.
Tryst with Stardom
Madonna sported their creation for her movie premiere in New York in 1991. They also worked with Madonna to create 1500 costumes for her world tour in 1993. The brand also designed for her music album. Madonna was included in the Dolce&Gabbana advertising campaign for the year 2010. Dolce&Gabbana has also created costumes for tours of stars like Beyonce, Mary. J Blige and Missy Elliott. They have designed costumes for Kylie Minogue and Whitney Houston. All this increased their popularity tremendously.
In the year 2006, the company started producing luxury accessories and leather products for women and men. In the same year, the company started producing cosmetics. In addition, they have recently launched domestic appliances in partnership with Smeg.
